Australia has made it their point to build their strong reputation when it comes to offering quality higher education and training programs in their universities, private colleges and some of their TAFE institutes. The large number of enrollees that come from overseas countries that plan to study in Australia are a direct reflection of this reputation.
Australia has a set of qualifications endorsed by the Australian Government called the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) and each qualification is paired with the level of education it represents.
Qualifications that are in AQF level 5 or more are known as Higher Education. The duration of these courses range from one year to five years depending on the type of qualification you have chosen. Higher qualifications are chosen by students who want to have detailed knowledge and gain expertise in their fields.
The main types of undergraduate qualifications offered by most higher education institutions are:
Applying for higher education courses in Australia is tricky as the requirements for higher education differ from course to course. Not only do you have to provide the academic requirements needed and specified for each of the qualifications, applicants are also expected to meet high-level English language requirements. Aspiring international students, who seek to apply for higher education in Australia, also have additional requirements such as prior knowledge of chosen subject, work experience, and/or a successful audition, portfolio, test and/or interview in that field.
Due to education providers having different entry requirements, it is best to contact these different providers and check to see which one applies to you.
Aspiring students should also take note of enrolment dates as it varies depending on the higher education course. These courses generally start from late February to mid-November. The academic year is typically divided into two semesters, while some institutions have a trimester system or they offer summer schools from December to February, which can reduce the total course length. Students enroll for their courses at the beginning of the year (usually in January or February), but application dates are typically towards the end of the previous year. Some institutions, in regards to certain courses, allow mid-year (July) intakes.
