Vocational Education or what is more widely known as Vocational Education and Training (VET) is a type of education and training program that focuses on providing skills to help people join the workforce, hone and upgrade their skills in their chosen area and help them move into a different career path. VET courses are offered by Registered Training Organizations (RTOs), Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes and private colleges. Some VET courses are also offered in some universities. VET courses are widely known for focusing more on practical and work-oriented occupational skills; they differ from higher education courses that are more theory-based and professional work oriented. However, it is important to take note that VET courses, particularly at the certificate IV, diploma and advanced diploma level, can often lead into higher education courses such as bachelor degrees. In the quest of meeting entry requirements, VET courses can be applied as additional credits.  It is also becoming increasingly common for higher education graduates to complete VET qualifications in order to gain practical, work-oriented skills to assist them to enter the workforce.

Entry Requirements

Applicants that wish to apply for VET courses are required to have graduated the Australian Year 10, 11 or 12. It is important to take note that, just like higher education courses, VET courses have different prerequisites and work experience requirements. Some courses may have prerequisite subjects or work experience requirements. For example, courses like arts and design may require the applicant to submit a portfolio.

Due to education providers having different entry requirements, it is best to contact these different providers and check to see which one applies to you.
