English is the official language of Australia and serves also as a first language. Based on the 2016 census, 73% of people in Australia spoke only English at home, including many first- and second-generation migrants. Australian English has a distinctive accent and vocabulary. Other languages spoken in Australia include Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, and Greek. People believe that there were 400 Australian Aboriginal languages at one time, but now only 70 of these languages have survived, while 30 are endangered. One indigenous language is still the primary language for about 50,000 Aboriginal people in Australia.

Most, if not all, of the people in Australia speak Australian English with a distinctive accent filled with Australian vocabulary that’s easy to pick up.
